Learn how to control electronic flash and ambient light for perfect exposures every time! The camera ISO, shutter speed and aperture; controls the ambient light, while the ISO and aperture settings controls the flash illumination.
Here's how it works! Let's say that you want to photograph a model or bride and groom at sunset, or in the case of the image below by Scott Robert Lim, in the afternoon. The sky is changing colors and would make a wonderful backdrop for your photos. Time is of the essence and you need to set up quickly. Step 1: Set your camera to correctly expose for the background & sky. As your subject may be facing away from the illumination of the sky, your subject will be dark, unless there is something to reflect the light from the sky back to the subject, or you provide supplemental off camera external lighting. Note: You will be providing the supplemental lighting in the form of external strobe units, either attached to your camera's hot shoe or attached to properly placed light stands with radio or infrared triggers to fire the strobes. Electronic Strobe Units are a light source with a built in shutter speed. Step 2: The trick is to set your strobe unit's output to match your camera settings, so that your subject will be illuminated correctly against the colors of the sky. Setting this up with ETTL or Auto can be very tricky, unreliable and full of trial and error. How would you like to get perfect exposures every time and be able to set it up in under 3 minutes?
