Tip101: Subject Separation

dlp-julia_montelucia-001-0390

• To create subject and background separation when photographing portraits of models outdoors, use a wide aperture lens setting in the range of f2.8 to f5.6 in combination with a medium to long telephoto lens, (f1.2 to f2.0 with shorter focal length lenses) to throw the background out of focus, thus creating background separation from the subject.

The result is a dynamic portrait with visual impact. Also, Look for other nearby reflective surfaces to add rim light to the edges of your subject for greater visual dimension. In the case of Image One, some backlight was also available in the setting. Also, by including a foreground element, in this case, the tree trunk, the combination with the out of focus background creates a sense of depth in the image
